After the second world war, Ferruccio Lamborghini established a tractor manufacturing business , in Bologna, Italy. He then ventured into other businesses, such as domestic heating and cooling systems creating substantial wealth for the Ferruccio. This fed a passion for luxury sports cars which he collected. His experience of owning a Ferrari including mechanical failures and led to Lamborghini starting his own rival sports car company. In 1963, Automobili Lamborghini was officially established in Sant’Agata Bolognese and later that year a two-seater coupe with a V12 engine known as the 350 GTV was unveiled.
Lamborghini then developed into a prestigious sports car brand. The Automobili Lamborghini logo features a bull, which refers to Ferruccio Lamborghini’s zodiac sign, the Taurus or a bull. But to add to that, Ferruccio was also a bullfight fanatic and that resulted in his choice of the bull to depict the logo. The logo contains a golden bull prepared to fight on a black shield with the golden inscription “Lamborghini” above it.
In 1973, a worldwide financial crisis followed by the oil crisis hit the company hard with sales falling sharply. Ferruccio ultimately sold a controlling stake in the company to Georges-Henri Rossetti. As further challenges undermined Ferruccio’s tractor business he sold his remaining interests to another Swiss businessman, Rene Leimer in 1974 and then retired. By 1978, Lamborghini company was bankrupt and in 1980 the company was placed under the receivership of brothers Jean-Claude and Patrick Mimran. They expanded the model lineup leading to the introduction of the LM002 off-road vehicle and the Jalpa sports car. In 1987 the Mimran brothers sold the company to Chrysler Corp which would then sell the company before the Volkswagen Group took control in 1998.
